We get asked this constantly, usually from someone who's already spent an evening going in circles between three different "best website builder" articles. Here's the honest version, platform by platform.
Squarespace
Best for: portfolios, personal brands, businesses that want something simple and don't plan to grow much technically.
Squarespace is genuinely easy to use and the templates look good out of the box. The trade-off is flexibility — you're working within Squarespace's ecosystem, which means limited plugin/integration options, and if you ever want functionality outside what Squarespace offers, you're stuck.
Wix
Best for: very small businesses wanting the absolute simplest setup, with no plans to scale.
Wix is similar to Squarespace in trade-offs, generally considered a notch below on SEO performance and site speed out of the box, though it's improved over the years. Like Squarespace, you're locked into their platform — no exporting your site elsewhere if you outgrow it.
WordPress
Best for: businesses that want to actually own their website, plan to grow, or need specific functionality (e-commerce, membership areas, custom booking systems, integrations).
WordPress powers over 40% of the internet for a reason — it's open-source, meaning you genuinely own your site and can move it to any host, any developer, any time. The trade-off is that "open" also means "your responsibility" — WordPress itself is free, but it needs proper hosting, security, and maintenance to stay safe (which is exactly why Care Plans exist).
The real question isn't "which platform is best"
It's "which platform fits where your business is actually headed." If you're testing an idea with no real budget and no growth plans, Squarespace or Wix might genuinely be the right, cheaper call. If you're running a real business that needs your website to work as hard as you do — and you don't want to be locked into one company's ecosystem forever — WordPress is built for exactly that.
